The first cybersecurity workshop promoted by the Port Cyber Arena took place last May 20, aiming at strengthening the cyber resilience of critical infrastructures, mainly those comprised within the port and logistics communities and their entire supply chain.
At the opening session, the importance of creating this centre was highlighted, emphasizing the value of providing a space equipped with advanced technology where it is possible to simulate cyberattack scenarios and test the effectiveness of incident analysis and response teams. This type of training is essential to reinforce both the preventive and reactive capabilities of various port agents. In addition to the different stakeholders of the Sines’ Port and Logistics Community, the initiative also included representatives from the ports of Leixões, Setúbal, and the Azores.
In a brief welcome note, Pedro do Ó Ramos, CEO of APS – Ports of Sines and the Algarve Authority, SA, emphasized the importance of the Port Cyber Arena as a strategic resource for the community. He also underlined that the facility represents a crucial step in consolidating a safer, more networked port ecosystem, prepared to respond to cyber threats, thus contributing to the efficient operation of the port and the entire logistics chain.
From his side, Ofir Hanson, Founder and CEO of Cybergym IEC, APS’s partner in the development of this project, addressed the growing importance of cybersecurity in the maritime-port sector, highlighting the increasing risks affecting port infrastructures and sharing real examples of cyberattacks that have impacted logistics operations on a global scale.
There was also room for the presentation and discussion of various risk scenarios, particularly failures in OT (Operational Technology) systems, illustrated through case studies. The relevance of comprehensive training, the use of appropriate tools, and the adoption of integrated response strategies were emphasized.
The session concluded with a practical demonstration, simulating a cyberattack on OT and IT systems, thus allowing the participants to observe the complexity and potential impact of such threats.
With such initiatives, the Port of Sines reinforces its commitment to innovation, security, and the training of the port community for emerging challenges in the digital domain, aligning itself with international best practices for the protection of critical infrastructures.
It should also be noted that the Port Cyber Arena is one of the products and services delivered by the NEXUS Agenda to the ports, transport, and logistics sector, being the first product to start its operation.
