Port of Sines inaugurates the Port Cyber Arena

Leading the way in the portuguese port sector

The Port of Sines inaugurated the Port Cyber Arena, an important milestone in its history, being an innovative infrastructure dedicated to cybersecurity and cyber-resilience in the port and logistic sectors.

The ceremony headed by the Minister for Infrastructures and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, attests the Government’s commitment in promoting digital security as a strategic asset for national competitiveness.

The Port Cyber Arena is a pioneering center, the first in Portugal to adapt advanced cybersecurity concepts to the transport and logistic sectors, combining training, specialized courses and practical simulations aimed at enhancing the ability of companies and institutions to respond to cyber threats. In fact, cybersecurity is, indeed, an ever growing challenge in the sector, due to its critical and strategic role in ensuring the resilience of the supply chains.

“On behalf of the Government, I congratulate the country’s leading port for its important achievements, not only for the yearly results, but also for this initiative, which demonstrates an integrated vision of what a port should be,” stated Miguel Pinto Luz. The Minister for Infrastructures and Housing enhanced that this project “is absolutely essential. The country has been the target of various attacks, on public administration, companies, industry, and logistics, and we recognize that the geopolitical context is changing. Ports are essential in assuring supply chains and the economy, it is thus very important that the Port of Sines has taken the lead in this process. But it is also worth noting that this investment does not resume itself to Sines; it is available for other port authorities and the entire sector to come here, learn, and share best practices.”

José Luís Cacho, CEO of the Ports of Sines and the Algarve, highlighted that “in an increasingly global and cyber-driven world, it is urgent for ports, as critical infrastructures serving supply chains, not only to improve their strategies to respond to cyber attacks, but also to reinforce predictive measures, enhancing cyber-resilience.” Luís Cacho added that “with the inauguration of the Port Cyber Arena, we are taking an important and pioneering step in the national maritime-port sector by providing a training and education center in cybersecurity, tailored for ports and logistics.”

The Port Cyber Arena aims at offering specialized training programs, tailored to the needs of the industry, real-world simulations with practical training activities to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities, as well as a collaborative platform, aiming at sharing know-how and best practices among stakeholders in the port and logistics communities.

This initiative is part of the digitalization strategy of the Port of Sines, aligned with the NEXUS Agenda, and complying with the port’s Strategic Plan, thus reinforcing Sines’ positioning as a hub of innovation, efficiency, and security for the supply chain.
